  • Message from the President

Thank you The elections department has tabulated the ballots and the membership has spoken. The members have voted for change and I totally respect our system of democracy. Our record of success is one that will not be broken any time soon and for that I am eternally grateful to the PBA staff. Without them none of our multitude of success would have been possible.

First things first All of you who have helped during the hurricane relief, both locally and to our brothers/sisters down south, have my personal admiration. I saw such selfless acts of kindness and a willingness to help that was truly awe inspiring.  For those of you who had damage, I wish you the best luck in dealing with the red tape of insurance claims.

Looking for a few good members This year is election year for the PBA, and as in every election cycle, I always welcome and attempt to  solicit positive, selfless people with fresh ideas, who truly like helping others, especially fellow officers, to run for office.

Who said thievery doesn’t pay? Our long-standing fight against Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez was a long fought, bittersweet victory. No Mayor within the State of Florida can ever act the way Gimenez did when he lost the vote for the health insurance increase.

Gala update The gala was an extravaganza never before matched. New technology and fresh ideas helped fill the room with a record breaking attendance. Once again, it made me so proud of our PBA staff who dedicated themselves to the huge success of this fitting event for our local heroes. The hours put into this project are truly incalculable.

Wrongful/Shameful indictment Many wrongful acts towards law enforcement are exactly what have created the discord between the SAO and the PBA. And, trust me I have seen injustices doled out by the State Attorney. People’s lives, especially good people like law enforcement, are Rundles’ political scapegoats.

Ride and Rally The PBA truly appreciates all of the support from Miami-Dade Commissioner Pepe Diaz for his unwavering support of law enforcement. His office personnel worked so hard on the event, and they are all such a pleasure to work with.

Homestead  Chief Rolle has been denying certain people, on a so-called “list,” the ability to qualify for their HR218 forearms requirements. I’m sure that in the Chief’s mind, these are people that were not ass-kissers, or purest compliant personnel.  That, in and of itself, displays Chief Rolle’s qualities.

Is Miami-Dade Chicago Bound? The year 2017 truly started out with a bang. Ten people shot in the first two days of the year and not much fanfare. Certainly no outcries from community activists or organizations that portray themselves as guardians of impoverished areas. No elected official called for town hall meetings.  No repetitive news coverage on the issue.

Happy New Year Life is truly like a roll of toilet paper. The closer you get to the end, the faster it goes. 2016 seems somewhat like a blur, it flew by so fast. But, what a year! It was full of ups and downs and we fought like heck to rid ourselves of some of the worst that government has to offer. In most cases, we succeeded. Others, well, we have to deal with them a little longer.

Line of Duty Our profession has been under immense, oftentimes unwarranted scrutiny, along with the ambush attacks we’ve been experiencing.

Elections November 8th is our last chance to remind Carlos Gimenez of our disapproval for how he treats law  enforcement. It’s our last chance to put someone who cares about law enforcement into the Mayor’s office. Not voting is a vote for Gimenez. Please make the small effort it takes to go and vote for Raquel Regalado, #92.

Who said it couldn’t be done? Incumbent Mayor Carlos Gimenez is a believer now. But, he certainly wasn’t a believer weeks or months ago. Between his arrogance and obscene money collected by strong arming business vendors, he and his confidants were celebrating even before the early voting began.

Important Votes Some of the most important local elections are happening August 30th. It is very important for each of us to either vote, find others who live in Miami-Dade to vote in the event we don’t, or both. Get your family members out to vote. Get everyone single person you know and motivate them to vote.

PBA Gala From the compliments we’ve been receiving, everyone had a grand time at the gala. Once again, the event was well-attended, reaching nearly 800 guests. Congratulations to all the law enforcement honorees. Additionally, we had the raffle for the Mercedes Benz, which was won by MDPD Officer Bridget Sanchez.

Election season nears As we enter the summer months, we will be inundated with political commercials, ads, literature and rhetoric. Many folks think the elections are in November, and they are correct, BUT, they sometimes forget that in August, they are elections too. The August is referred to as the primaries, and November is known as the general election.

Typical County  In typical County fashion, trying to get simple public records information is more difficult than an inmate escaping from a facility.

Putney’s incorrect article I’ve received many calls complaining about the Op Ed piece, in the Miami Herald, written by Michael Putney. The article, printed on February 2, was indeed full of inaccuracies.

Weird times Recently, an officer pulled over believing that the woman in the car behind him had an emergency, only to learn that she had followed him, claiming he was speeding. She followed the officer, filming and narrating her perspective of the events. Mind you, never does she show her speedometer, thus we won't really know if she was correct.

New beginnings The year 2016 will undoubtedly be a new beginning. For starters, we will have a new U.S. President, for better, or for worse. Either way, new challenges will emerge. We will have new congressional challenges. Same goes for judicial races and locally; we will either keep the same anti-law enforcement, anti-public safety, county administration, or go in a new direction.

What an Honor Throughout my years I have had the pleasure and honor of working with some of the hardest working and most talented people around. However, there is a smaller group within that small grouping of people and they are at the PBA.  You have no idea of how lucky we are, as a collection of law enforcement officers, to have these special extraordinary few at the PBA.

First PBA app Moving on up! The PBA is the first to launch its own app. This is one of many projects that we have been working on to modernize our operation. Now, you can contact the on-call person directly through the app. You’ll be able to go on the web page, see events, get membership privileges, and much more through the app.

Congratulations It was great to see one of the good guys make it to the top. On Oct. 16, Ed Hudak, Jr. was sworn in as Chief of the Coral Gables Police Department.  Oftentimes, we see folks who step on others get to the top and once there are horrific leaders, simply because they were horrific people to begin with. Chief Hudak is the complete opposite.

St. Michaels Day Mass Thank you to all who took the time to attend the 13th annual St. Michael’s Day Mass. A special thanks to Sunny Isles Police Chief, Fred Maas, for not only assisting with the mass, as he does each year, but for filling in for me, as this was the first time I missed the celebration, due to a prior engagement out of town.

Nation under siege Just as the cover implies: there is extreme danger to life or property in the world we live in. With the war on police in full swing, and total silence from our national, state and local, elected officials, we are on our own. We need to protect one another and just to be clear, an attack on police is an attack on America.

A Leader with a backbone The passing of retired MDPD Robert “Bobby” Parker was truly a sad day for the law enforcement community, for the general community, and for all who knew and loved Director Parker. Bobby embodied everything it takes to be a true leader and he will be sorely missed.

Passing of a friends The loss of our old friends never gets any easier, and it seems that we are losing so many of our old timers, as we call them, but trailblazers if you sit and think a bit.
